How Google Cloud works for Shell

We’re here to help Shell ‘Make the Future’

The Future of Work can look different for anyone, but one thing is certain: technology plays an important role in driving change in collaboration and productivity. Together, Google Cloud and Shell can change the world for the better. We can inspire a young generation to join Shell to help them take the lead in the Energy Transition. We can collectively deliver technological solutions that accelerate development towards a sustainable future and share experiences on that topic.

The Future of Work
This specific website is dedicated to our view on the Future of Work, so what does this topic mean to Google and how can we help Shell? Amid growing pressure to innovate quicker, meet customer expectations faster and attract more talent, everyone wants to know what it takes for tomorrow’s business to succeed. Luckily, many of the technologies, trends and cultural norms that will shape the workplaces of the future are used at transforming, forward-thinking organizations around the world today. We collected these learnings and built our own suite of workplace products to move Shell forward light-years ahead. Open Source. From scratch. No legacy. We called it G Suite.

G Suite stands out on many different topics, yet two quick-wins in particular are interesting. First; an entire digital native generation grew up with Google solutions around in many different ways. Next-generation leaders often take or expect to take Google solutions to their workplace. In recruiting the necessary talent to solve the world's energy problems, providing the right technology can be crucial. Second; Google Cloud users immediately enjoy the world-class security standards that Google uses to protect the data of more than a billion users. Including Google's hardware solutions such as Chromebooks or Chrome Enterprise immediately increases Shell's global security measures.

What does that look like in practice? That’s what this website is dedicated to show. We presented a white paper, our learnings from creating G Suite (and we explain what the secret is behind its user base that expanded over 5 million), and other interesting articles to explain our ideas. Short on time? Watch the video below to experience the power of G Suite, our collection of office related tools.

Sustainability
At Google Cloud, sustainability is at the core of our operations. We are committed to purchasing enough renewable energy to match consumption for all of our operations globally. For each unit of electricity we use as a company, Google will purchase an equivalent amount (or more) of renewable energy. We are also committed to maintaining carbon neutral operations. This means that a transition to Google Cloud, immediately reduces your CO2 impact.

As the image below shows, Google is a major buyer of renewable energy. We’d love to share experiences with Shell and team up on this topic.

The work that we do in the energy business
We have helped customers in the energy industry remain competitive, ensure compliance and accelerate innovations with our powerful tools, including secured multi-cloud and hybrid solutions that drive technology to the edge. We’d love to do the same at Shell. Let’s go through some cases, or read through our dedicated website for the energy industry

Infrastructure modernization -  Reliable scalability, at fraction of the cost: In scaling its hallmark electricity and gas payment solution, Podo replatformed on Google Cloud’s scalable, reliable infrastructure, withstanding high traffic spikes for a fraction of the cost compared to physical machines. By deploying virtual instances with Compute Engine, Podo has the flexibility to meet changing demands by adding and subtracting virtual machines at will — while using Cloud Logging and Cloud Monitoring for every stage of the process. The power of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning - Using Google Cloud Platform grants access to Innovative machine learning products and services, that we used for example to optimize the energy usage of our data centers. Plug-and-play solutions are a.o.: A.I. Hub (our hosted repository of plug-and-play AI components), AI. Building Blocks (making it easy for developers to add sight, language, conversation, and structured data to their applications), and our A.I. Platform (code-based data science development environment, lets ML developers and data scientists quickly take projects from ideation to deployment.). Interested in reading more about our A.I. and M.L. capabilities? Continue reading here.

Application development -  Improve productivity with efficient end-to-end development: To streamline operations when their technicians are in the field, the Portuguese utility company EDP turned to GCP to solve data access issues on their customer mobile app. EDP migrated from its data center and rebuilt the app in only two months using Google App Engine, autoscaling to meet peaks in demand — all while connecting customers to their data even during maintenance periods. Continue reading about this case study here.

IoT solutions - Unlock business insights in real time from data across your globally dispersed devices with Cloud IoT:  Cloud IoT is a comprehensive set of integrated services that can help you use predictive analytics for rotating equipment. Plus, you can use machine learning to gain deeper insights from petabytes of information through natural language querying. Device data captured by Cloud IoT Core gets published to Cloud Pub/Sub for downstream analytics. You can do ad hoc analysis using BigQuery, easily run advanced analytics and apply machine learning with AI Platform, or visualize IoT data results with rich reports and dashboards in Google Data Studio.
